GitHub Copilot
AI pair programmer integrated into VS Code, JetBrains IDEs, and GitHub - inline completions, chat, and autonomous agent mode.
Our take
The safest default if you're already in the GitHub ecosystem - reliable completions and agent mode at the lowest entry price of any major assistant.
Best for
Developers who want a dependable, low-cost assistant tightly integrated with GitHub and most major IDEs.
Pros
- Cheapest entry price among major tools ($10/mo)
- Works across VS Code, JetBrains, Visual Studio, and Neovim
- Deep GitHub integration (PRs, issues, Actions)
Cons
- Agent mode is less capable than Cursor or Claude Code for large refactors
- Heavy users need the $100/mo Max tier
How it compares
Less capable for complex multi-file refactors than Cursor or Claude Code, but unmatched value for everyday completions.
Full review
GitHub Copilot is Microsoft's AI pair programmer, built into VS Code, Visual Studio, JetBrains IDEs, and Neovim. It started as an inline autocomplete tool and has grown into a full agentic assistant that can read your codebase, propose multi-file edits, open pull requests, and respond to comments directly inside GitHub.
The core experience is still its strongest: fast, context-aware code completions that understand your project's conventions, plus a chat panel for asking questions about code, generating tests, or explaining unfamiliar functions. Copilot's agent mode can now plan and execute small-to-medium tasks autonomously, though it's generally less ambitious than Cursor's or Claude Code's agents on large refactors.
At $10/month for individuals (with a free tier for students and open-source maintainers), it's the cheapest entry point into AI coding for most developers, and its GitHub integration means PRs, issues, and Actions workflows can all tap into the same assistant. For teams already on GitHub, it's an easy default; for those doing heavy autonomous refactoring, it's worth pairing with or comparing against Cursor or Claude Code.
