Our take

Lemon Slice builds real-time interactive video avatars from a single photo - photoreal or cartoon - that hold live voice-and-text conversations, with an API to put a face on any LLM and voice model. Best for live video agents and characters, not pre-rendered clips. It is early (seed-stage, late 2025), so expect rough edges, but entry pricing is cheap at about $8/month.

Best for

Builders who want a real-time, talking video avatar - support agents, characters, companions - driven live by their own LLM and voice stack.

Pros

  • Real-time interactive avatars, not just pre-rendered clips
  • Works from a single photo, photoreal or cartoon
  • API connects any LLM and voice model to a face; 30+ languages
  • Cheap entry (~$8/mo) with pay-as-you-go for overage

Cons

  • Seed-stage and new (launched late 2025) - expect rough edges
  • Live video is credit-heavy; costs climb with call minutes
  • Quality and likeness vary by source photo

How it compares

Where HeyGen, Synthesia and Tavus focus on rendered avatar video, Lemon Slice is built for live, two-way conversation from a single image - closest to Tavus but lighter and cheaper to start.

Full review

Most avatar tools render a video you play back later. Lemon Slice is built for the live case: a face that talks and reacts in real time, generated from a single photo, in either a photorealistic or a cartoon style. Its API lets you connect any LLM and voice model, so the avatar becomes the front end for a support agent, a character or a companion app, in 30-plus languages.

It launched late in 2025 on a $10.5M seed round from YC and Matrix, so it is early and you should expect rough edges and the odd glitch. Pricing starts around $8 a month with pay-as-you-go for heavier use, and because live video burns credits by the minute, costs scale with how much your avatars actually talk. The closest comparison is Tavus, but Lemon Slice is lighter and cheaper to start.
