Our take

PandasAI lets you ask questions of a CSV, SQL database or data lake in plain English, and it writes and runs the analysis for you. It's an open-source Python library (MIT), free for commercial use, with 20k+ GitHub stars and millions of downloads. You bring your own LLM key and a little Python comfort.

Best for

Data teams and technical analysts who want conversational analysis inside their own Python stack, without a paid SaaS seat.

Pros

  • Chat with CSVs, SQL and data lakes
  • Open source (MIT), free for commercial use
  • Connects to many databases and LLMs
  • Large, active community

Cons

  • Needs Python and an LLM API key
  • Answers vary with the model you use
  • Not a polished no-code dashboard

How it compares

Versus Vanna AI or Wren AI (in our catalog), PandasAI works at the library level inside your code rather than as a hosted text-to-SQL service.

Full review

PandasAI, from the YC-backed Sinaptik team, is an open-source Python library that makes data analysis conversational. Point it at a CSV, Excel file, SQL database or data lake and ask in plain English; it generates and runs the code, using whichever LLM you connect (OpenAI, Anthropic, VertexAI and others) plus RAG for context.

It's MIT-licensed and free for commercial use, with 20k+ GitHub stars and millions of downloads behind it, which makes it a strong, no-seat-cost option for Indian data teams comfortable in Python. The trade-offs are inherent to a library: you need some technical setup and an API key, and answer quality tracks the model you point it at, so it complements rather than replaces a governed BI tool.
